Meeting with Secretary of State

Photo from a meeting today (21/7/17) with Priti Patel (Secretary of State for International Development) and Alex Shelbrooke (Elmet & Rothwell MP). This took place in the church hall of St Mary's Catholic church in Rothwell.

Alex Shelbrooke had asked Priti Patel to come to his consituency and meet people as he regularly receives mail about development issues. The meeting was attended by people from churches in the local area, including CAFOD supporters from St Benedict's parish in Garforth. Children from St Mary's Primary School in Rothwell also attended.

The photo shows Priti Patel (2nd left), Alex Shelbrooke (Right) with CAFOD supporters from St Benedict's: Marg Siberry (left), Brian Flynn (Centre) and Dot Read (2nd right).

Marg Siberry asked the minister about the money given to the World Bank and how this is spent. Priti Patel responded by saying that for the first time, the money given by Britain to the World Bank has been earmarked for spend with the poorest countries in the world, rather than  it also going on projects with middle income countries. However, there was no opportunity to explore this question in more detail in terms of the kinds of projects supported by the World Bank. CAFOD is campaigning to have more of those resources spent on small-scale renewable energy projects which would be ones that are most useful in terms of transforming the lives of the poorest communities.
